February 18th and "Usui"

February 18th marks the time of "Usui" (雨水) in the Japanese twenty-four seasonal divisions.

Usui (Rain Water)

Usui is one of the twenty-four seasonal divisions, following "Risshun" (立春), the beginning of spring. It signifies the end of winter, when snow turns to rain and plants begin to sprout. In 2025, Usui falls on February 18th.

During the Usui season, there's a custom of starting to display Hina dolls (雛人形), traditional Japanese dolls for the Girls' Festival. The rain that falls during this period is called "Shunrin" (春霖), a blessed rain that moistens the earth and nurtures the plants.

雨水（うすい）とは、二十四節気の1つで、立春の後に訪れます。

冬が終わり、雪が雨に変わり、草木が芽生え始める頃とされています。

2025年の雨水は2月18日です。

雨水の時期には、昔から「雛人形を飾り始める」という習慣がありました。

また、この時期に降る雨は「春霖（しゅんりん）」と呼ばれ、草木を潤す恵みの雨とされています。
